Someone needs to take responsibility for managing conflicts. Is it you? What helps you decide whether to sit back or to intervene in conflicts? What can you safely do and what should you not do? There is a wealth of experience in New Zealand of leading people well through conflict as well as managing conflicts poorly.

In this masterclass, we will compare our own experience with what theory and practical experience tells us will help lead people through conflict to more cooperative relationships. We’ll help you to look underneath the presenting conflict issues and to select practical approaches to support people moving out of conflict.

Learning Outcomes

Participation in this masterclass will help you to:

  • assess the conflict and describe it in objective terms to staff in conflict
  • recognise what responses are risky or unhelpful
  • consider a number of actions that can help form your preferred interventions.


  • What the conflict might really be about as opposed to what people say
  • Some actions, guidance and learning from past examples of leaders getting it wrong
  • Applying the conflict management suggestions using a workplace conflict example
